CARTOONISTS RIGHTS and four other leading free expression organizations – Artists at Risk Connection (ARC), PEN America, Cartooning for Peace, and Freedom Cartoonists – voice their gravest concerns over cartoonist Atena Farghadani, arrested in Tehran mid-April 2024 and allegedly beaten by IRGC personnel.
Today four organizations concerned with the safety and free expression of press cartoonists – Cartooning for Peace, Cartoonists Rights, Freedom Cartoonists, and Freemuse – make a joint statement on behalf of Zehra Ömeroğlu, recently found criminally liable for “obscenity” over a cartoon that appeared in Turkish humour magazine LeMan in 2020.
Cartoonist Zehra Ömeroğlu is at risk of imprisonment after a cartoon published in LeMan magazine in 2020 was found obscene by a board of censors in Türkiye.
Effective immediately CARTOONISTS RIGHTS will cease posting to Twitter/X, citing mismanagement, disfunction, and increased hatred on the social media platform.
