Freedom Cartoonists Foundation has presented its inaugural Kofi Annan Courage in Cartooning Award. At a glittering event hosted by the City of Geneva, and to mark World Press Freedom Day, cartoonists Vladimir Kazanevsky (Ukraine) and Gábor Pápai (Hungary) received their awards from Nobel Peace Prize laureates Dmitry Muratov (Russia) and Maria Ressa (Philippines).
Read the award statement on the Freedom Cartoonists Foundation website.
The foundation prepared two moving video portraits of the cartoonists describing their experiences: for Pápai, of political and judicial persecution; and for Kazanevsky, of sudden displacement from home in wartime.
The full awards presentation can be seen below and includes contributions from multiple dignitaries.
As announced last week, Cartoonists Rights Network International have entered into partnership with Freedom Cartoonists Foundation, presenting their respective Robert Russell and Kofi Annan Courage in Cartooning Awards in alternate years.
