Foundation and Corporate Support

0

CRNI thanks these foundations, corporations and other bodies for recognizing the value and impact of cartoonists in the political and social process, and for the difference their generous support has made in the lives of our clients:

Sincere and special thanks to the Herb Block Foundation (Washington, DC), for their ongoing grants in support of CRNI’s core operating costs annually. The Herb Block Foundation has also assisted in supporting past Courage in Editorial Cartooning award ceremonies.

The Challenge Fund for Innovation in Journalism Education (New York, NY) for their one-year challenge grant to help CRNI develop its infrastructure and individual donor base. We were able to match the challenge through an individual contribution from Bob Mankoff, cartoon editor for the New Yorker magazine. CFJ is a partnership of the Knight Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation, and the Tribune Company.

New York Times Company Foundation (New York, NY) for a grant to publish cartoon illustrated advocacy documents for cartoonists who are under great threat.

UNESCO (Paris, France), for their grant supporting strengthening the security of CRNI’s website. During 2007 our website came under very aggressive hacking attack from militant Islamists who wanted to silence our support for Middle-Eastern cartoonists in trouble. It has not been hacked since.

UNESCO supported us again in 2020/21, under the auspices of their Global Media Defence Fund and in direct response to mounting anxieties concerning the criminalisation of cartoonists.

The Open Society Foundations (London, England), for a companion grant to the UNESCO project to strengthen our original website.

The Jyllands-Posten Foundation (Viby, Denmark) for a grant to underwrite our annual awards dinner in 2007, when the event honored the 12 Danish cartoonists whose lives were under threat from militant Islamists.

The DOEN Foundation (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) for a grant in 2012 to support MENA region (Middle East and North Africa) cartoonists under threat, to develop institutional capacity in the region, and to develop a safety manual for endangered cartoonists.

The Doha Centre for Media Freedom (Doha, Qatar) for their grant to support our annual Award for Courage in Editorial Cartooning event in 2013.

More recently the award has been given with in-kind support from the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists and the Australian Cartoonists Association.

The National Endowment for Democracy for their grant support in 2015/16 and 2016/17, in particular funding for our workshop at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum at Ohio State University, convened in September 2015 to plan a co-ordinated, global response to threats against cartoonists. We thank the staff at both the library and university for all their assistance as well as IFEX and the Herb Block Foundation for additional support.

Art Soiree LLC  for money raised during auction events in 2016 and Young D.C. for a series of annual grants from their Cartoons and Cocktails charity cartoon auction held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

The Professional Cartoonists Organisation UK for money raised doing their “Gagged” exhibition, London in 2017.

The Vejle Kunstmuseum (Denmark) for money raised during their exhibition of satirical cartoons in 2018/19.

Further thanks to IFEX for institutional support grants in 2018 and 2020.
