2001   Nikahang Kowsar  (Iran)

NikKowsar_270x180Nikahang “Nik” Kowsar was subjected to death threats and was the prospect of a long prison term for a cartoon that criticized a politically influential cleric. After spending four days in prison, Nik fled the country.

A full account of his experiences is given in his interview with the Iran Human Rights Documentation Centre.

Ultimately Kowsar was tried in absentia, receiving a four year sentence in 2017.
